In this interview, we engage with Per Funkquist, a distinguished forester and Sustainability Procurement & Wood Supply director at Billerud, a global leader in the manufacturing and development of sustainable paper and packaging materials. With a robust commitment to quality and customer value, Billerud is at the forefront of reshaping the industry for a sustainable future.
Can you give us a brief introduction to Billerud and its position in the market?
Billerud is a world-leading company in the production of paper and packaging materials crafted from virgin fibers, with a strong dedication to sustainability, quality, and customer value. With 10 production units across Sweden, the USA, and Finland, over 6,100 employees in more than 13 countries, and customers in over 100 countries, Billerud boasts an annual turnover of approximately SEK 42.6 billion and is listed on Nasdaq Stockholm.
Tell us a bit about yourself. What is your background, and what are your main responsibilities within the company?
As a forester with extensive experience in the paper and cardboard industry, I've worked in various capacities, including timber procurement, transportation management, import management, and, for the past decade, focusing on sustainability and communication. My role involves extensive customer communication with clients across Europe and worldwide.
How has PEFC certification benefited Billerud, and how does it help you achieve your goals?
Certification is integral on multiple fronts. PEFC certification sets standards for forestry practices, and internal and external audits create a framework for continuous improvement. The PEFC entrepreneur certification also contributes to raising industry standards.
What does it mean for you personally to work for a company that takes responsibility for forests?
It's crucial, and I take pride when our customers make the shift from non-renewable materials to Billerud's renewable and recyclable fiber-based alternatives.
In your opinion, what role will sustainability and certification play in the future of your sector?
Their role is increasing, evident in several examples today. An unsustainable business model is not viable in the long run. Certification remains crucial for customer communication, and there's no indication of diminishing interest in sustainability.
On February 15 2024, PEFC in the Nordic countries will host a webinar on sustainable packaging. We are so excited to have you on board as one of the speakers. Could you briefly outline what you will discuss during the upcoming webinar?
The webinar will delve into customer perceptions of fiber-based products, the importance of certification, and the level of customer interest in forestry issues, offering valuable insights into these critical aspects in today's business landscape.
