Finland's best-selling takeaway coffee is bought at R-kiosk's more than 350 locations across Finland and is enjoyed in PEFC-certified cardboard cups made by Huhtamäki. 10 million cups of coffee are sold per year, which makes it the biggest product of R-kiosk. With such a large product, sustainability is particularly important, and it has been taken into account in the coffee cup in many ways. The cup is PEFC-certified and recyclable, and the coffee itself Paulig’s certified coffee.
How does R-kioski verify the origin of products and packaging? "The role of environmental labels and forest certification labels in verifying sustainability is important, because the company's own sustainability declaration must have comprehensive documentation. A well-known third-party certification makes your own work easier. We are involved in the development of our own products. For others, we collect packaging information from a separate service. In addition, our company's own ethical operating guidelines also guide our partners in terms of packaging," says sustainability and communication manager Kiira Kivisaari.
"In terms of sustainability, all three areas – environmental, economic and social are important to us. We have a sustainability strategy, the core principles of which are that we treat sustainable development as a business opportunity, we cooperate to bring about systemic change, and we base our decisions on science," Kivisaari continues.
"Our goals in the sustainability strategy guiding the entire Reitan Convenience are, for example, improve the transparency and traceability of our value chains. Through certifications, the reliable origin of the raw materials is ensured. Customers are constantly expecting more acts of sustainability and information about the origin of raw materials. For consumers, a simple way to ensure sustainability would be certification. It can be difficult for consumers to understand the reliability of so-called own sustainability labels. However, the directive advocated by the EU will curb this playing field", says Kivisaari.
The PEFC label on R-kiosk's coffee cup indicates sustainability: the wood used in the product comes from sustainably managed forests and controlled sources. The PEFC label shows the company's commitment to sustainable sourcing in a verifiable and easy-to-understand way.
